It is not end-to-end encrypted: we hold the keys, so the family can open photos from any device and in email. Here is exactly what that means.
- Each family space has its own encryption key, held in AWS KMS.
- Photos and videos are stored encrypted, and location data is stripped from photos before storage.
- Only the people you invite can open your family space. No ads, no strangers, no ranked feed.
- Only text goes to an AI provider, for translation and the digest summary. Photos and videos never do, and nothing of yours trains a model.
- Every photo link expires: within a day in the app, and after seven days in an email.

Questions families ask first
- Do grandparents need to install an app?
- No. Once a day they get one email with the previous day's posts and up to four photos from each, right in the message. Tapping a photo opens it in their web browser. Installing the app is optional.
- Who can see our photos?
- Only the members of your family that you invite. There is no public feed, no discovery and no way for someone outside your family to browse your photos. A family admin can choose to share a single post outside the family with a link that expires.
- Does WholeFamily use our photos for AI training or advertising?
- No. Photos and videos are never sent to an AI model, never used for advertising and never sold. Two features send text only to an AI model, translation when you ask for one and the daily email summary, under terms that prohibit using it for training.
- Does every family member need to pay?
- No. One subscription covers the whole family. The person who created the family subscribes, and everyone they invite joins at no charge.
- What happens to our photos if we stop paying?
- Your family's photos are not deleted when a plan ends.
